AmmoniteAmmonites are ancient chambered shell fossils. Their imprints in dark gray rock are evidence of the vast seas that covered much of North America at the end of the Mesozoic Era. When ammonites were common, dinosaurs were disappearing and flowering plants were developing abundantly. These fossils are relatives of the modern mollusks. |
