European Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)

Early Europeans used to write on boards made from slabs of beechwood.   Book and beech have the same etymological roots. Today, this tree provides wonderful hardwood as well as delicious nuts that squirrels, mice, and  birds eat. In their native forest beech rise about seventy feet high,  and can survive in many types of soils and environments.
